HOW HOLLYWOOD CHANGED THE "LOOK" OF
THE CONQUISTADORS!

Armor from Spain about the time
of earliest Spanish Exploration 1492 to 1520..
It can be discribed as "late
gothic" style. Earlier gothic would have had longer shoe tips
when mounted for battle. This
probably reflects the heaviest armor used by Cortez in Mexico.
This look better characterizes
Cortez's army than typical illustrations with open face "morion"helmets
like the one on the right,
which was more typical of a
period 80 to 100 years later. Hollywood gave us this look in the 1940's
to show off the handsome
faces of Tyrone Power and Cesar
Romero in "Captain from Castile". The look stuck for Cortez ever since!
